Above is an example of the "wipeout method" (usually used in oil painting) for a tonal underpainting, that we did in the second session. You must have a damp rag ready, and use lots of slow medium (CPM). Just look for the darks and lights in the subject, and ignore the colours. Your tonal ruler is a handy tool to use as well! I found out later that this is the ancient renaissance technique called grisaille.

In the fifth session we have learnt all about tone and practised exercises with it. Now we are ready to be really brave and try painting with bold chunky brushstrokes, making sure to leave the painting fresh and not overworked. This is an impressionist or alla prima (one sitting) method. It is good to try this with a time limit so you force yourself to paint fast. This bowl is in the Met (Metropolitan Museum of art) and is from 3750 BC Egypt (yes, really!). I think it is a delight not only because of its lovely shape, but also because it amazing to think of how old it is.

| Here is the painting that took fifteen minutes of very fast loose brushstrokes - an impression only, over a texture impasto background. This is a painted miniature after Kensett's much bigger 'Old Tree' painting. | ![]() |
