Steps 1-4: Preparation and design with the client!

Step 1 The specification of structure, style and content, and getting the colour scheme together to match the existing room colours
Step 2 Sketch a drawing of the composition for checking by client. Approved! I'll make the orchestra feature even more as per their request...
Step 3 Painting several small miniature sketches with paint - try out acrylic in 3 styles and one brief oil sketch. Style (1) try out a flat 2D cartoon-style, (2) ink cartoon style, (3) full 3D with shadows in acrylic and (4) a quick sketch of the same but in oil paints. Look carefully at the difference in painterly styles in the bottom of the woman's dress fabric. Also in the oil, the background brush strokes look more pleasing to the eye.
Step 4 Final choice from client: paint it in oil! With oil paints the lovely brush strokes of the painting stay in the final work, whereas with acrylic the colours tend to blur and blend. The oils will give a lovely final result.
Step 5 Get specially made stretcher frame timber and build the frame with bracing
