Have you ever heard of “Zentangles”?
It’s soooo good for your soul 🙂
Even more creative than colouring in books…
No pressure, no skill required. Just a pen in your hand doodling.
Here’s a project for you to have a dabble at it.
- Go and ask Uncle Google all about “zentangle”. Set a timer and STOP drooling after 15 minutes and come back to real life to do step 2. Whatever you do, DO NOT go down into the rabbit hole of Pinterest – you will never come out! Set a timer and come back. Really.
- Cut 9 pieces of nice drawing paper or card. Each piece is 10cm square.
- Line them all up in a big square (3×3 grid).
- Get a pencil and draw some swoopy lines that cross over each card so that each piece has at least one pencil curve running across it. Or you can draw a simple shape like a fish, or a flower, or whatever you like. Just keep it simple.
- Flip the whole entire 9 over as if it’s a single panel:
- Then number all of the backs so you can rearrange them easily again later.
Underline numbers like 1. 6 and 9 so you know which way up they are.
- Turn them back over and jumble them up. Pick a card and start doodling with a black pen (waterproof ink). Fill the whole card. Be creative. Just make your doodles stop on either side of each pencil line. By doing this it will look like there’s an invisible line along there when you look at the whole thing later. This helps to bring all the individual panels together as a single whole artwork.

Do at least one Zentangle each day for the week, or two on weekends or if you get carried away. If you’re keen, you’ll have the whole set done in a week. Share your results!
The bonus: if you’ve used a good quality waterproof pigment ink pen, you’ll be able to colour them in afterwards if you want.
Have fun!
